A Few Words on Security

There have been a couple of news articles this week relating to security in medical technology.

The first (computerworld) identifies the risks of running software on legacy unsupported hardware, which is the case for many computer managed devices installed in hospitals over a decade ago.

The cost of this equipment prohibits regular upgrades and highlights the need for low cost alternatives, such as smartphone apps.

The second (wiredbbc) shows a lax attitude towards data protection, ignoring the HIPAA requirement for encryption of data on device, in transit, and at rest on the server.

Health Tech companies need to design apps from the ground up with security in mind.

Microsoft Case Study

An other great day today: Just got confirmation that the flyers are printed for the physiotherapy show at Excel and we finished the review of the Microsoft case study which will be published in a few weeks.

We're really looking forward to working with even more physios after the show.

Microsoft Band Hackathon

After a disappointing Medtech and Wearable shows, I was fortunate enough to attend the Microsoft Band Hackathon yesterday at the MS Ventures office in Whitechapel.

I was really impressed with the Band SDK and how easy it was to integrate with the D+R Therapy app we're building for Windows Phone and it was great to see what the other groups were using Band for.

I think the egg and spoon race simulator has to be mentioned even if it is unlikely to get an App Store release.

Great Events Coming Up

I just signed up to two Excel events in March, medtec (http://medteceurope.com/uk) and the wearable technology show (http://www.wearabletechnologyshow.net).

Looks like it is going to be an exciting month.
